Paint Gun Tips and Techniques| Ensure the best use
The purpose of spray Paint Gun is to atomize the paint that break it up into tiny droplets and direct these droplets toward the section to coat . It can deliver the highest possible transfer efficiency of paint. With the right sprayer techniques, people use it differently and get the same output. It’s actually not an easy to get the flawless finish of sprayed-on paint for solid coverage of any furniture job. adjust the air pressure can be compensated for by spray gun distance or its speed, however, is that gun technique, surface set up are extensive and cleanup are wide, can lead to big differences in transfer efficiency making this painting process unsuitable for most small jobs. While DIY type sprayer do a nice job of covering small homes, for professional output even on single walls or furniture job, an airless spray gun is the perfect choice.
Typically spray guns and spray heads do the same job. Spray guns are hand-held and light weight equipment. Sprayer heads are generally mounted on a moving holder such as a chain-on-edge machine. Its aim’s to atomize the paint (break it up into small droplets) and direct these droplets toward the part to be coated. Guns should deliver the highest possible transfer efficiency (percentage of sprayed paint that reaches the part).
How many kinds of spray guns are there?
There are few kinds of spray guns available in the market. These are Conventional, airless, air-assisted airless and HVLP guns are generally used. Conventional spray guns may be of the pressure, gravity or suction feed type. Electrostatic versions of many guns are also available. Suction feed or cup feed and gravity guns are not generally used for production work because they rarely hold more than one quart.
With a spray gun you can control the direction and size of the spray pattern. Spray cans hold about 4 ounces of paint. Obviously you will have a much larger quantity to use with a spray gun. You can mix or adjust the paint in ways that are not possible with a spray can.

Tips and Techniques
Every gun has its own advantages and facilities, but also some user limitations. It depends how gun technique you apply. Generally paint uses three different technique and supplied to a spray gun . These are
Suction or siphon feed– This simple equipment uses cup guns. Its holding capacity is too short to cup size and its up to one quart.
Pressure feed– in this method the pump is pump through the gun that can keep the production continuous.
Gravity feed– using the technique, paint flows by gravity through the gun. No external air required in it. Infect, few HVLP gravity gun uses high air pressure to help increases delivery more paint.
For all purpose use
Follow below rules about spray gun to work distance to keep safe operation.
Most conventional spray 6 to 8 inches
- Airless spray – 12-14 inches
- HVLP spray – 8-10 INCHES
- Elestrostic- (Its required for one inch of distance per thousand volt)
Gun Movement and Position Technique
Gun Distance
There are two things can affects over the spray pattern. These are : firstly, the fan angle and orifice size of an airless tip, secondly, the gun tip distance from the work piece being sprayed. We see all airless tips are sized at the 12″ spray distance from spray gun. Its also standard size that we recommended. If your requirement 12″ plus, you need a narrower fan width to retain your efficiency. This change capable to create large difference and the end you’d be applying paint quick and smooth.
Gun Position
Spray guns offer paint at high speed. When you move the gun in one place then spraying paint the paint will continue run and may get an uneven paint coverage. Begin applying paint, you can prevent this situation, start moving your gun up and down use always as a long motion straight movement. With every application try to cover by overlapping about 2cm of the previous spray, this will prevent light surfaces or tiny holes. If you want avoid overloading the edges and corners move your spray gun quickly.
Triggering
It means when you press the trigger at the end of each stroke the gun release the trigger and stop spraying. Its not hard to use. Just pull the trigger and keep moving your sprayer top and bottom or side to side, on each stroke. However, this gun movement should be started before triggering the gun and release the trigger before the end of first strokes. Using this technique any one can the gun controls an airless paint system.
Overlapping
If you plan to started the first stroke on the left side of the surfaces, the spray gun is moved down through the bottom of the stroke that next stroke started at opposite side (right side). The aiming of the amount of overlap that the spray gun enter through at the bottom of the previous stroke of your sprayed surface to achieve the desired results. Having this skills it will keep you more productive, increasing the efficiency and help to best coverage.
Banding method
Banding method capable to decreases overspray, For less overspray and paint usages a vertical stroke at each end of a larger panel is pretty good, rather than the horizontal strokes. You can frequently uses on the outside corner of a box or file cabinet. Its tends to reach the spray gun at the surface corner.
Small/Vertical Flat Surfaces
If you are working on a small, vertical flat work area configurations, the banding method is used. Spraying a horizontal pattern, band the edges of the part, next finish the part with horizontal strokes. The process is spray the Class B side of unfinished wall and after this continue to spray the Class A (previous spayed) wall. If there seems any overspray turbulence, it will not appear on the Class A side of the wall.
Spray Speed
The right way applies a full wet coat application with each stroke without sagging. Sometimes you seems hard to get with a single pass due to “sagging”. For this solution two or more coats can be applied with a flash off period between each coat keep spray movement flexible. If excess gun movement is essential to avoid flooding the work, then the fluid tip orifice is too big or the fluid pressure is too high. When apply full wet coats and the stroke speed is very slow, then the fluid pressure should be increased slightly or a larger tip be used.
Spray into inside corners
Be a little patient when spraying at inside joint compound where two walls meet before you get an even coat in one swipe. Point the spray gun at an angle and aim the spray gun directly into the walls corner, spraying each of the adjacent walls over your work that form the corner evenly and in one pass and try each layer to be as smooth as possible. to eliminate all the dust, you need to use horizontal strokes instead of vertical strokes to spray the area each adjacent to the corner for avoid double coating the same area.
Spray into outside Corners
If the project involves outdoor corner wall, spraying the outdoor corner for the job you’re working on, a straight-on method can be used. The adjoining surfaces are then banded.
Long/Vertical Flat Surfaces
Spray long vertical flat surfaces with horizontal strokes in sections from approximately 18″ to 36″ wide. With practice, you will find the distance most comfortable to your needs. As on small vertical flat parts, use the same banding technique on each end of a long vertical flat part. Use the same triggering technique as with a smaller panel, but overlap each section approximately four inches.
Level Surfaces
If you’ve done spraying any small or vertical surfaces, you likely already know this trick, but it’s a good practice that always start on the near side of the section and work to the opposite side of the part when working a level or horizontal surface. This method can offers the overspray to fall on the uncoated work of the surface. Perhaps you need to some gun tilt for better result.
Slender Parts
When you making plan to spray slender parts, just follow previous adjustable spray pattern that what type of pattern are fits the part of your surface, mind it, a vertical spray pattern increases the spray speed much quicker and smarter. choose a spray pattern that fits the part to be finished. When using a vertical pattern, the spray speed must be faster.
Round Section
When needs to spray such furniture round shape, table or cabinet legs, you can choose a narrow spray pattern that using three vertical strokes. You need to keep your gun movement faster to protect any sags and runs while use a single strokes and vertical pattern. Some Common Spray Technique Errors
Turn down errors
For proper spray you can also try out one or more method to the pressure control high. If you’re not able to use a sprayer accurately then you won’t get the result you expect and deserve. To achieve the expected output just turn down the pressure (with the help of pressure knob) as minimum as you can. This will gives you in facilities which are given below-
To avoid any unnecessary costly repairs decrease the wear in pump and tip so that you can save some amount of money from replacing worn tips. Moreover, less overspray saves you more paint and operate consistently an even coat professional finish.
Trigger the Gun!
To ensure an even amount of paint always triggering the gun for change the wind direction. You’ll have minimum double the mil thickness in each wall you change direction on each stroke and be moving into out of each trigger pull and so on. This process is very easy to just pull the trigger and keep moving up and down or side to side, overlapping and moving down the wall spraying constantly. If you are not triggering the gun every time you change direction you will have at least double the mil thickness in every spot you change directions. in the right light or over time, your customer may be able to see heavy areas. for the best finish, you should trigger the gun on each stroke and be moving into and out of each trigger pull.

Keep it clean
When you are done with the spraying job, you have to clean everything carefully for the best outcome, especially the spray gun with the cleaning tools provided. That’s really true of all high-end paint gun which you’ll use it as a new one in the future.
The convenient side minimal parts of the spray gun makes it actually easy to use for the manual cleaning solution. Although there are many types of gun cleaning solution we use, but the cleaning system of the Paint Gun almost is same, due to most of them have the same components.
As people noted, the most comfortable process cleaning the gun is right use of the cabinet after its use. This system also included a paint gun cabinet which is built in jet and sprays gun wash instead of water. In this cabinet, you need to put all entire the body parts of the gun which wash cleans whole the components from the components.
If you’re willing to try out one more process to clean the gun with the use of cleaning solution which use to clean and wash the paint from the gun. For more info you can click through Air gun spraying page
As an added pro tip, it is generally better to follow the manufacturer’s gun instructions, of course. While in use, These are the basic methods for spraying a wall without stopping. But for the light job, keep your paint on too light in the starting. According to little practice, you can be easily fixed it with an extra coat. Due to spray too much paint you may overload your surface. You have more control over the coverage and the end of the day, use a gun cleaner to clean the inside and body parts of the Paint Gun gun regularly.
